A telescopic handler or telehandler is a machinery which is well-known in the agriculture and construction industries. These machines are similar in appearance and function to a forklift or a lift truck but are really more like a crane instead of a forklift. The telehandler offers increased versatility of a single telescopic boom which can extend upwards and forwards from the vehicle. The operator can attach lots of attachments on the end of the boom. Some of the most popular attachments consist of: a muck grab, a bucket, a lift table or pallet forks.
A telehandler usually utilizes pallet forks as their most common attachment to be able to move cargo through locations that are usually unreachable for a typical forklift. Like for instance, telehandlers are able to transport cargo to and from places which are not typically reachable by conventional forklift units. These devices could also remove palletized cargo from within a trailer and position these loads in high places, like on rooftops for instance. Before, this situation mentioned above would require a crane. Cranes can be expensive to use and not always a time-efficient or practical choice.
Telehandler's are unique in that their advantage is also their biggest drawback: as the boom extends or raises when the equipment is bearing a load, it also acts as a lever and causes the vehicle to become somewhat unbalanced, even with the counterweights on the back. This translates to the lifting capacity decreasing quickly as the working radius increases. The working radius is the distance between the center of the load and the front of the wheels.
Once it is fully extended with a low boom angle for instance, the telehandler would only have a four hundred pound weight capacity, whereas a retracted boom can support weights as much as 5000 pounds. The same model with a 5000 pound lift capacity which has the boom retracted might be able to easily support as much as 10,000 lb. with the boom raised up to seventy.
England originally pioneered the telehandler in Horley, Surrey. The Matbro Company developed these machinery from their articulated cross country forestry forklifts. Initially, they had a centrally mounted boom design on the front portion. This placed the cab of the driver on the rear part of the machinery, as in the Teleram 40 model. The rigid chassis design with a rear mounted boom and the cab situated on the side has ever since become more and more famous.
Side shifter: A kind of attachment which allows an operator to position the attachment arm laterally for more efficient load placement is referred to as a side shifter.
Forklift fork Positioner: A type of hydraulic attachment which helps position the forks separately or simultaneously according to the load size is referred to as a positioner. It relieves operators of lift trucks from having to adjust the forks manually.
Pole Attachments: A kind of attachment which are utilized to lift carpet rolls are called a pole attachment.
Telescopic forklift forks: Attachments that allow the driver unload or load vehicles from one side are referred to as Telescopic forklift forks. They permit the handling of two pallets of different sizes simultaneously and are handy for double-deep racking.
Forklift carton clamp attachments: Through the application of uniform clamping force, these hydraulic attachments make high-volume carton handling easier. They are outfitted with arm pads lined with four-way reversible rubber. A backrest to the loads helps prevent damage to the loads.
Slip sheet attachment: An option to the pallet systems is the slip sheet attachment. This hydraulic transport and storing system clamps onto the slip sheet so as to draw it onto a thin and wide metal fork. Useful for intra-corporate deliveries and for shipping overseas.
Man Basket: A man basket is a platform that slides onto forklift forks. It is designed to raise employees. Safety features comprise brackets for attaching safety harnesses and railings to be able to prevent falls.
