While on their trip, John spent time talking to former business contacts whom the Groves stopped to visit along the way. These conversations combined with a tragic occurrence—two workers being electrocuted on scaffolding when the Groves were going to the Hoover Dam— John discovered a substantial marketplace for a product that could promptly and safely lift people in the air to accomplish maintenance and other building functions.
Upon returning from their travels, John established a partnership with two friends and purchased a metal fabrication business in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania. In 1970, starting operations with a crew of twenty staff, they designed and sold the first JLG aerial work platform. The business incorporates some of the simple design elements of that original lift into existing models.

Starting the engine from cold is a great idea. Note whether there is too much smoke and the ease with which the engine turns over. This is specifically crucial with trucks that have IC engines.
Testing the performance of the truck in tough situations must be included in the test run. A trained driver could drive the truck in forward and reverse, up the ramp.
You can inspect an IC engine truck yourself. On a clear area of floor, run the truck around for a few minutes while a trained driver tests the hydraulic functions. Afterward, examine the ground underneath for signs of fluid leakage. Even seemingly insignificant leaking can lead to serious problems which would be expensive to fix later on.
A skilled person should inspect the masts and chains. Check with and without a load that the mast works smoothly. Watch for 'binding' or sticking of the mast. A warning indication is play in the mast channels or between the fork carriage and mast. Another is creeping forward or creeping down of the mast when loaded. These could be signs of problems with seals, ram or valve.
If the truck is not new, the mast might have been changed at some time. Make sure that the mast and any fitted attachments adhere to the rating plate on a truck.
